Penny Rounding Coming Soon
The City of Auburn is preparing for a change that affects cash payments, due to a nationwide shift in penny circulation.
WHY IS THIS HAPPENING?
As of May 2025, the U.S. Department of the Treasury determined that rising production costs would result in the end of penny production. In December, our banking institution notified us that they will no longer provide pennies as part of change orders. As a result, once our current supply of pennies is depleted, exact change may no longer be available for cash transactions.
WHAT DOES THIS MEAN FOR OUR CUSTOMERS?
* While pennies are still available, we will continue to provide exact change for cash payments.
* Once our penny supply runs out, the City will implement a penny rounding policy for cash payments only.
* The final total of cash transactions will be rounded to the nearest $0.05. [Rounding is applied only to the final total, not to individual items or fees.]
CASH TOTALS WILL ROUND AS FOLLOWS:
* Totals ending in $0.01 or $0.02 → round down
* Totals ending in $0.03 or $0.04 → round up
* Totals ending in $0.06 or $0.07 → round down
* Totals ending in $0.08 or $0.09 → round up
EXAMPLES:
* A cash total of $10.02 would round to $10.00
* A cash total of $10.34 would round to $10.35
* A cash total of $10.87 would round to $10.85
* A cash total of $10.08 would round to $10.10
PLEASE KEEP IN MIND:
Credit cards, debit cards, checks, and online payments are not affected and will continue to process exact totals. Prices and fees are not increasing — this change only affects how cash totals are settled when pennies are unavailable.
We appreciate your understanding as we adapt to this nationwide change. Additional notice will be provided once the penny rounding policy goes into effect.
