Automated Curbside Collection

Solid waste & recycling in Auburn.
Auburn residents: Your curbside collection is getting easier! Beginning July 13, 2026, your residential curbside trash and recycling will be picked up by an automated side-load truck.

CARTS:
Your new trash & recycling carts will start arriving Monday, June 29!
You will receive two new 64-gallon wheeled carts, one for trash and one for recycling. These carts are included with your service. Colored lids help to keep items clean and dry and distinguish trash from recycling. There is no need to be home to receive your carts. Carts will come with an informational brochure with instructions for placement as well as a calendar and frequently asked questions.

CART DIMENSIONS:

Please remember: You MUST use the carts provided and you cannot get any additional carts. Carts are going to be delivered before the
automated truck begins operating. Please wait until the week of July 13th to begin using your new carts.

* All trash must be inside of the cart with the lid closed. We will no longer collect any material left outside of the cart!

CART PLACEMENT:

You must allow at least 3 ft of space between your trash and recycling carts to ensure the arm can grab the cart without knocking the other cart over. Allow at least 3-5 ft of space from any fixed object (mailbox, telephone pole, fence, parked vehicle) so there is no risk of damage.

Always ensure the front of the cart is facing towards the street for collection.

* Carts must stay upright for collection.
* Do not place carts back to back.

YOUR COLLECTION DAY:
While the TIME OF DAY when you trash is collected very well might change (due to the more efficient collection process), at this time, there are no changes to the scheduled route days. Should any adjustments be necessary in the future to enhance efficiency, both the City of Auburn and Casella will ensure residents are notified in advance.

DISPOSE OF OLD CARTS:

As we roll out Auburn’s new automated curbside collection program for trash and recycling, we know many residents are wondering what to do with their old bins and barrels. We’re happy to help make that part easy!

From July 13 through July 25, Auburn residents are welcome to drop off their old trash cans and recycling bins at 67 Kittyhawk Avenue. The drop‑off site will be open daily from 7:00AM to 7:00PM. Our team will make sure bins are recycled, repurposed, or donated whenever possible — keeping useful materials out of the waste stream and putting them to good use.

During this two-week period (7/13-7/25), if you are unable to transport your bins to Kittyhawk, our team is here for you. Simply call Auburn Public Works at 333-6670, provide your address, and our crew will swing by to collect your bins! [This option will not be available after 7/25.]

If it’s more convenient, residents may also bring their old bins to Maine Waste to Energy (110 Goldthwaite Road). Please note that bulky waste fees will apply there.

We truly appreciate everyone’s patience and cooperation as we make this transition together. These small steps — like responsibly retiring old bins — help keep Auburn clean, sustainable, and moving forward. If you have questions, we’re always here to help!
