The first step in filing for your marriage license is to have your marriage intentions recorded in the Office of the Town or City Clerk of the municipality in which at least one of you resides. If one of you is a Maine resident and one is not, and you plan to marry in the State of Maine, you must file in the town/city of the Maine resident. If intended parties are both from another State or Country and wish to marry in the State of Maine, they may file their intentions in any municipal office, although it is recommended that you file your intentions in the City or Town where the marriage will take place. Both parties must sign the intentions in the presence of the Clerk or a Notary Public.
Marriage Intention Form - must be filled out using black ink. Please do not sign the form unless you are in the presence of the Municipal Clerk or a Notary Public. Both parties must be present to sign before the Clerk for license issuance.
The fee to file your intentions and to obtain a marriage license is $40.00.
If you have been married before and are divorced, you must show a true attested copy of the court's divorce decree, with an original signature and facsimile stamp of the judge or clerk of court which must be presented to the Clerk. An annulment decree is required if the last marriage ended in annulment. This should not be a church annulment but a civil decree. If your last spouse has died, you will need to show a certified copy of the death certificate for the deceased spouse.
After you have taken care of the preceding details, you may obtain your marriage license from the City or Town Clerk with whom you record your intentions. The license must be used within 90 days after the date the intentions were filed, and must be returned by the officant.
PLEASE NOTE - Our office hours are 8:30 AM to 4:00 PM Monday through Friday. The process for filling out the marriage intention form and obtaining your license may take approximately 45 minutes. Please have your intentions form filled out no later than 3:30 PM.
