SMOKE TESTING

  • July 08, 2019

Please be advised that the Auburn Water & Sewerage Districts are beginning “smoke testing” of Auburn’s sewer and drain systems TODAY, July 8, 2019.

During the testing, white smoke will be introduced to the sewer system by a smoke-generating machine. Smoke WILL be venting from manhole covers in the roadways as well as plumbing vent pipes on/near building rooftops. THIS SMOKE IS NORMAL AND SHOULD NOT CAUSE ALARM!

Smoke should not enter buildings unless there is a dry trap, unused fixture or a plumbing defect. If it does enter a building, occupants should not be alarmed – the smoke is non-toxic, non-staining and will dissipate quickly through open windows. Residents may want to pour 2 gallons of water down basement floor drains or unused plumbing fixtures to ensure that your drain traps will be effective.

Smoke inside a structure should be reported immediately by calling the testing team directly: (603) 570-8791.

The firm conducting the testing – Weston & Sampson Engineers – will be in a marked vehicle; their personnel will be wearing clearly-marked Weston & Sampson shirts and safety vests; and they will have ID cards with them.

Homes and businesses within the testing zone have already received a notification sheet and will receive another sheet once the testing of their area has been completed. All questions regarding this project should be directed to the testing team at (603) 570-8791 or to the Auburn Water & Sewerage Districts at 784-6469.
