Auburn's New Futsal Court

  • August 18, 2021

The City of Auburn will soon have a beautiful new futsal court in Union Street Park.

The city was the recipient of a generous MUSCO Mini-Pitch System Grant, presented in partnership with U.S. Soccer Foundation, which - along with CIP funding and donations from community partners – is making it possible for Auburn to install the city’s very first futsal court.
Futsal is a popular version of soccer that is played on a court (indoor or outdoor) with a smaller, weighted ball. Auburn’s new court will help serve the growing demand for soccer-related programming in the area and will also provide a familiar and much-loved activity for Auburn’s growing new Mainer population.

The court is scheduled to be open for play in the fall of 2021 in what locals often refer to as “the gully.” Additional upgrades are planned for the Chestnut Street neighborhood. As many locals have noticed, the playground area near the basketball courts was removed to make room for the futsal court. During the FY22 budget process, Auburn’s City Council added funding to the CIP Budget - over $1 million - for playground improvements throughout the city.

The Auburn PAL Center playground is among those identified as a priority for the city, in addition to Lake Grove Park, Pettengill Park and Raymond Park. Upgrades will take place as part of a two-year process. The PAL Center playground upgrade is scheduled for a public input process this fall, with the hope of having it ready for use by fall of 2022.
